Yankees activate catcher Gary Sanchez from injured list

New York gets some rare good news in a season overwhelmed by injuries to  more than 10 players already.

The New York Yankees activated power-hitting catcher Gary Sanchez from the injured list after he missed more than three weeks of action. Sanchez was off to a hot start with six home runs in his first 11 games before suffering a calf injury.

However, the Yankees still have 12 players on the injured list, including significant injuries to outfielder Aaron Judge and pitcher Luis Severino. Judge is expected to be out until at least late May with an oblique strain. Severino has been out since the middle of training camp with a right (throwing) shoulder strain. In addition, shortstop Didi Gregorius is expected to be out until July after having Tommy John surgery on his right (throwing) elbow late last season.

The team is hopeful of getting outfield Giancarlo Stanton back by the end of this month as it tries to piece together its powerful lineup. Stanton has been out the past week with a strained biceps muscle.

Sanchez was leading the American League and all catchers with his six home runs before getting hurt. Sanchez had 71 home runs in the previous three seasons as one of the top-hitting catchers in the game. He was also hitting .268 this season after hitting only .186 in 2018.

The other Yankees on the IL are Miguel Andujar, Dellin Betances, Aaron Hicks, Greg Bird, Troy Tulowitzki, Jordan Montgomery, Ben Heller and Jacoby Ellsbury.
