Dodgers pitcher Julio Urias arrested on domestic battery charges

After a report of a disturbance in a mall parking lot, Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Julio Urias was arrested on suspicion of domestic battery Monday night.

According to the Los Angeles police department, Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Julio Urias was arrested Monday night on suspicion of domestic battery. He spent the night in jail, and was released at 1:30 a.m. PT after posting a $20,000 bail.

Urias was arrested at around 7:30 p.m. PT Monday night, after an incident involving a woman in the parking lot of the upscale Beverly Center. TMZ Sports cited witnesses who said Urias was arguing with a female companion, and shoved her to the ground. There’s also apparently some video evidence confirming that account. But speaking to responding officers, the woman reportedly denied anything physical took place, insisting it was nothing more than a heated verbal argument between she and Urias.

As expected, the Dodgers issued a statement on Urias’ incident and arrest on Tuesday morning. Per ESPN:

We learned about the alleged incident this morning and are in the process of gathering information. As a result, we have no comment at this time regarding the incident. However, every allegation of domestic violence must be taken seriously and addressed promptly, and we will cooperate fully with the authorities and Major League Baseball to ensure that happens in this case.

Urias, 22, has been one of the top young pitchers in the Dodgers’ organization. So far this season he has a 3.18 ERA, a 10.2 K/9 and a 2.9 BB/9 over nine appearances (four starts) with two saves. He pitched in just eight games between the 2017 and 2018 seasons, as he dealt with a shoulder injury and eventually had surgery.

MLB has released a brief statement of their own regarding Urias’ arrest, only saying “We are aware of the incident and are in the process of gathering facts.”
