Bryce Harper posted a photo on his Instagram page and dropped another hint about his future.
Fans of the Chicago Cubs (myself included) would have to be almost drooling at the thought of Bryce Harper wearing the friendly pinstripes. Even Harper himself has stated that when he becomes a free agent, he wants to look at making that a reality. But this week, he dropped a photo on social media that further opened up that possibility.
Longtime MLB analyst Peter Gammons revealed earlier this month that Bryce is interested in becoming a Cub. Harper is scheduled to become a free agent after the 2018 season.
He took to to his Instagram account this week and stirred the pot just a little more.
Put the financial aspect aside for just a minute. Because when he does become a free agent, he will likely be seeking a deal somewhere in the $400 million range. Imagine the power overload of having Bryce Harper, Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo in the same lineup. The idea alone would nearly melt any opposing pitcher off the mound.
But the question is where would he fit in. There is currently a bit of a crowded outfield. You have Jason Heyward, who seems content to stick around. Ben Zobrist will be heading into the final year of his deal. The only option is whether Kyle Schwarber will be brought back after having a stressful year at the plate. He was recently demoted back to Triple A Iowa, so there could possibly be a slot opening. If Zobrist re-signs, he can play any part of the outfield.
The thought of Harper joining the ranks at the Wrigley Field is mouth-watering, to say the least. It’s also a bit far-fetched, financially, as there’s only a small group of teams that could realistically afford what he will ask. But what do you think would happen if the Cubs could do the unthinkable and make another historic playoff run?
